The Price of Safety: Why Low-Cost PPE can be a Dangerous Compromise

Many workers are inadvertently not maximizing their safety efforts, by sticking with outdated PPE. Using older PPE isn’t automatically unsafe—but it often means they are leaving comfort, durability, and performance on the table. We recently sat down with Industry expert Derek Sang on our Podcast (The Electrical Safety Podcast) to discuss.

Derek believes to truly benefit from safety innovations; the responsibility lies with the wearer: you must proactively ask for the latest and greatest technology from your employers and PPE distributors. The supply chain won't change unless you require it.

Here a few key points and insights from Derek summarized below:

Debunking the Old Myths of FR Clothing

For years, FR garments carried a reputation for being too hot, too heavy, and uncomfortable. Modern technology has finally mitigated these complaints. New fiber combinations and weaving techniques mean comfort and mobility no longer have to be sacrificed for protection.

When to Replace: You should replace FR clothing when it shows signs of wear and tear, such as rips, tears, frays, or threadbare. Once the fabric integrity is compromised, the garment's protective capacity is diminished, regardless of the FR Engineering.

The Risk of the Lowest Price

In PPE, price is often a direct indicator of quality. The simple truth is that compliant fabrics, labor, and FR science cost money. If a generic garment is being sold for half the price of a reputable brand, it is highly likely that something crucial was compromised in the production process to cut costs.

You won't know that those corners were cut until the moment you need it to save you from a thermal exposure. Always prioritize quality and a reputable supply chain over seeking the lowest price.

Safety and especially something as personal as your PPE is, should not go to the lowest bidder.
