The Definitive Guide to Arc Flash Training & e-Learning 2025

Current State of Online Arc Flash Training

Before I start … If you are here to learn more about our training options in 2025... click for more updated information . If you are here to learn why we train the way we do, keep reading as we think we have solved a way to keep your people engaged.

Since 2020, the online training industry has had to develop at a rapid pace because of Covid.

Nowadays (March 2025) there are training opportunities available everywhere you turn online, and most will get the job done. But you really have to ask yourself … are they built according to the needs of you and your team? … probably not.

We humbly believe, there is still a great opportunity to keep online training immersive, with audience engagement as the focal point.

How to keep the audience interested:

Storytelling

If an organization is paying for their workers to attend training, they want to be assured they retain and can use the information. Based on our experience, we feel the best way to retain information, especially online, is through storytelling. Storytelling is a fundamental and powerful element in training courses, weaving a narrative thread that enhances engagement and retention.

The classic PowerPoint presentation, with facts and figures may not work as well as once did. And do we actually use any of those equations and figures in our daily life?... probably not. We especially do not think this stuff when trying to solve real life problems in the field.

By trainers including real-world electrical safety stories, scenarios and/or anecdotes, online courses become dynamic and immersive experiences. Also, stories can simplify complex topics.

And let’s face it, electrical safety has some complex areas of learning.

Retention

Retention is influenced by various factors. When individuals actively participate in discussions, story telling aids, or visual aids, they create more connection, reinforcing the learning experience.

Additionally, meaningful repetition may also play a crucial role. Regularly revisiting and reinforcing learned material helps transfer information from short-term to long-term memory. We really feel gamifying training improves retention as well… and who does not like a leaderboard.

And most importantly students retain information best when a positive and supportive learning environment is present with effective communication.

Immersive Arc Flash Training

At Leaf, we know there are different types of online training …  some include immersive methods and some don’t. Before we start discussing, I want to point out, any training is better than nothing. Many people who should be trained, are not! Get trained.

To keep things straightforward you can divide the workforce in need of electrical training into two simple groups.

- People who do electrical work; and
- People who don’t

What is Needed?

When it comes to electrical safety/arc flash training, people who do not do electrical work, should still have basic training of the hazards, just in case they find themselves working near these hazards (this happens a lot more than you probably think). They need to be able to recognize where those hazards might exist and how to stay a safe distance away.

For the people who do electrical work, it is obvious they need to have more complex and meaningful training modules.

Some eLearning Options That You May Come Across

An online presentation / module

-Likely no trainer.
-Static presentation.
-Student is likely doing training alone.
-Student can work through training at their own pace or it also may be timed.
-May be completed very quickly.
-Harder to retain information as it is harder to keep the student accountable.

Some Participation – Online presentation with quizzes and interactive features throughout...potentially

-May have a live trainer.
-More participation which should equate to more retention.
-Student is alone or may be in a small group.
-Will try and test general knowledge.
-May try to include day-to-day job function training.
-May provide the employer with some metrics on the how the student is doing.

Interactive – personalized learning experience with simulations, branching scenarios, and more complex functions.

-Useful takeaways are an expected result.
-Engaging.
-Company should see how all students are scoring and what skills are in need of more work.
-Scenarios or simulations may be included which will allow student to immerse themselves in the problem and journey, not just the answer.

Fully immersive – Student has constant interaction with the customized material.

-Fully customizable based on the clients needs.
-Scenarios can be built using real world problems that the client’s facilities are facing.
-Virtual leaderboards and analytics in real time.
-Includes branching stories based on student decisions that should feel like in person training.
-The most effective at training student and having them retain the value.

At Leaf, we feel these different training methods effectiveness rank in this order, when considering retention, engagement etc. :

What’s Next - What are your options?

Are you ready to get your workers into some Electrical Safety Training sessions? Good Move!

If you are looking for the best way to get you workers to learn… we have you covered. We aim to make the training as close to the real thing as possible. Instead of a slide deck followed by an arbitrary test, your training will use full-immersion e-learning that focuses on decision-making skills. These are based on the same decisions that your workers will have to make every day, while on the job.

Gamifying the results also helps pupils/workers not only retain, but understand the concepts at a deeper level.

The elements of a great scenario-based training session:

Decision - The activity asks people to decide what to do, not show what they know.

Context - The activity has people with names in a specific place, doing specific things.

Realism - The context is the same as the daily job.

Consequences - The feedback shows the realistic consequences of the pupil’s decision.
